This book, like the Bush Book Common Butterflies of the South West, has been written to enable amateur observers to identify the butterflies they see.

The region concerned is the south-western part of Western Australia, south of a line running from Shark Bay to Esperence, referred to here as "South-West W.A". This region includes a wide range of habitats, which supports many butterfly species. Although the common species are the ones most frequently seen, with a little effort, many of the rarer ones may also be found.

This book provides information on the 28 threatened, rare or uncommon species. The two books together include all of the region's species.
